Yesterday marked a month since my most recent surgery. It is somewhat ironic that over the past few days my vision hasn’t been great, with today being the worst of the last few. I was told by my cornea doc at my post op check up two weeks ago that things looked good. When I told him of my continuing sight issues, he told me he could run a test. The only problem with this would be he wouldn’t know how to correct any issues that the test might show. I just keep telling myself to deal with it and move on.

For the most part, I’ve remained focused on moving on. I double and triple check purchase orders before hitting the send button. I don’t want to send four Belvedere 8600 shampoo bowls to a customer that ordered a shear bracelet… When my sight is better, I try to get more done. There are days when I don’t want to go to bed since I’m not sure what my sight will be like the next day.

Of course, it doesn’t take much to knock me off track. If someone makes a comment or I run into someone or something, my focus is gone. Sometimes I simply miss a field in a form that cost time or money, like I did last week when I added some inventory to ForYourSalon.com and missed the weight field for a Jeffco 316t Ionic Dryer. When there is no weight, the item ships for free. That cost us between $25 and $30 on the one we sold over the weekend.

I’m trying to work around the issue. Currently, we ship more than half of the items we sell at ForYourSalon.com and our storefront on Amazon.com. I can’t pull or ship the orders that we ship (I can’t read the labels,) that is something that Eliz has to do. I do handle all the drop ship orders, which are usually shampoo bowls, shampoo bowl parts, hooded dryers, barber chairs, etc. We are trying to find additional beauty items to drop ship. We are also doing more in affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is where we promote a product that is sold by someone else. If it sells, we get a commission. It is like when I mention the EatSmart Precision Pro Digital Kitchen Scale in White that helped me to lose 80 pounds and keep it off. If you were to click that link and purchase it (or anything else from amazon.com) by using that link, we make a commission. We currently have several sites in various stages of development: a web hosting review site, a car insurance information site with quotes, a payday loan site, and several beauty related sites. The nice thing about affiliate marketing is that once a site is setup, the only thing left to do is market it. There are no customer inquiries, no ordering inventory, etc., unlike an ecommerce site. One of the best ways to market these days is from articles. So I’ll be writing, which is something I can do with or without sight.

Todays delivery schedule took us into Wilmington with a styling chair and wall-mount workstation. We got a late start since we had quite a few orders to box up. (Besides selling on our site ForYourSalon.com, we also sell on Amazon.com as, wait for it, ForYourSalon — they won’t let us add the dot com since it might take traffic directly to our site.) We also had to head to Newark, DE to pick up our Clairol order. We love going down there, because we usually stop at Cheeseburger in Paradise to eat. Time was tight after we picked up the order, but we stopped for lunch (it was 4.30, but neither Eliz or I had time for lunch earlier.)

After placing our order, I wanted to go to the Men’s Room. Since we’ve been there more than a handful of times, I know where the bathrooms are located. At the time we were there today it wasn’t very busy, so I was pretty confident I could make it there without walking into someone even though we were on the other side of the restaurant. I verified with Eliz how I should walk over there and then proceeded to make my way there. When I arrived at the bathrooms, I looked at both doors. As I mentioned in my last post, my eyes have been extra sucky for awhile, so I couldn’t make out the words on the door. One door seemed to have four letters, while the other door had more. Neither looked like Men or Women.

Frustrated, I walked back to our table. I told Eliz I didn’t know which bathroom to go in (literally.) She had to walk back over there with me and point me into the correct bathroom. I was embarrassed. I asked Eliz what it said on the door. She said Kane was on the door. WTF is Kane? How ’bout putting the man stick figure on the door? It didn’t help that I was hungry…

I brought this up because I read a blog entry the other day on Jalapenos in the Oatmeal titled In the Land of Pretend. In the post, Jeff Flodin writes about how he pretends to do things to look busy or feel important. I don’t think I’m like that. I just don’t want to look out of place or feel stupid. Today it was both.

In case you’re wondering, Eliz had a burger with bacon, honey mustard and fries, while I had the Parrot Beach salmon with broccoli and rice. YUM!

For the last several days, I was thinking about what I was going to write for this blog entry. My eyes weren’t going to be part of the post. One year ago today I started paying attention to what and how much I was eating. Through mid-summer, I lost about 80 pounds. I’ve been in maintenance mode since then, eating about 1800 calories a day. I will create a post dedicated to how I did it and a spreadsheet to track your daily caloric intake. For now, just know that this scale was instrumental in my weight loss. It’s $25 and you get free shipping.

The thoughts on my post changed once I went to see my retina specialist, Dr. Garg. I figured in the last couple of days, there might be a conflict on what to write about because of my appointment, but only if there was anything new with my left eye (the one that sees more than light.) Sure, I’ve noticed my vision getting worse over the past months. It’s been brutally frustrating, but when we left for my appointment I thought I’d get a, “Everything looks okay, I don’t know why you’re having these new troubles…” Today, Dr. Garg noticed three things that are most likely causing the decrease in my vison and only one of them has to do with my retina.

It seems that the only issue with my retina is from folds that developed from my pressure being low for a long period of time following a trabeculectomy (glaucoma surgery) back in 2003. Dr. Garg told me that even though my pressure has been in the “normal” range (for me) over the last five years, the folds will never go away (just like you can never get a piece of paper completely smooth again after it’s been folded.) This will slowly take my vision. Dr. Garg said if that were my only eye issue, it really wouldn’t be too big a deal. The other issues Dr. Garg saw today were both cornea related. One is corneal edema, or swelling of the cornea. The other issue has to do with the transplant I had two years ago. He said there was some cloudiness behind the new (to me, 69 years old to the original owner) endothelia. Dr. Garg stated he thought that happens in about 25% of transplants. I’ll know more when I visit my cornea specialist in about 10 days.

When we left the appointment, I said to Eliz that at least there was something there and I wasn’t imaging it. I was somewhat happy. It seems that the cornea issues can be handled with meds and a “procedure” (which makes me think of City Slickers – “You’ll have surgery, but call it a procedure…”) After we returned home and I thought about it, I realized that for the first time in my life, I can’t keep my vision from getting worse. From the time I was a young boy, I was always told ‘there’s no way to improve your vision, we’re just hoping to maintain it.’ Of course, I had hopes and dreams over the years that something would come along… Now, my vision can’t even be maintained. I hope it’s not a slippery slope.

This post is sponsored by the EatSmart Precision Pro Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scale. It has an extra large LCD readout (which means that I can see it when I’ve got my reading glasses on) and an 11 pound capacity. I’ve used this product since last December to lose weight. I weigh everything in grams, because, to me, it is easier using a whole number. If you want to drop some weight, this is a tool that will certainly help you.

For the past four or five days, my vision has sucked more than normal. I don’t know why. It’s almost like interference on a television screen. The picture is still there, but it’s hard to see through the static. I’ve been a little nervous about my vision because Eliz and I are heading to New York tomorrow for an internet marketing conference — Affiliate Summit East. Just walking around a crowded event will be challenging.

When my vision doesn’t cooperate, like over the past few days, I spend less time at the computer and the time that I do spend there I get less done since it takes me longer to read. It gets pretty frustrating. It seems I need help from Eliz or the kids to get even the simplest of tasks done. Tonight, Jane and I looked through some inventory to pick out some specials for ForYourSalon.com (we ended up adding the 1189 flat iron from Hot Tools, the Turbo Silverado hair dryer, the One ‘n Only Acid Extra Body perm, and Hair Rescue Intense Clarifying Treatment from Zotos to our specials.) I have to tell you that I get pleasure when I can accomplish something on my own.

Tonight I realized how poor my vision was. While flipping through the channels, I saw that Ingloourious Basterds was on. Eliz and I watched that movie in late April, just after my surgery. I absolutely loved it. The best part of it then was I was actually able to read most of the subtitles on my own. That wasn’t the case tonight, so I didn’t watch it.

So it’s been a few weeks since my last update. There were several times this past week I wanted write something, but I just couldn’t steal an hour to do it. It’s Sunday night, Eliz is sleeping and the kids are both away. Here is my chance!

I’ve been wanting to go to Affiliate Summit East in New York since I learned about it a few months ago. My one big problem was how. If Eliz went with me, how would we run ForYourSalon.com and ship orders? And, more importantly, even if we conceded that there will probably be few orders since it is the middle of August, what would we do with the kids? Also, since Eliz was going to assist me, I didn’t think it would be fair to have to pay for her. If I could go on my own, I would. (The last time I did something like this on my own was in January 2001. I flew to Miami for a Taylor Rental event – we were interested in purchasing the one in Media and my prospective partner bailed on the event two days before we were to leave. I went anyway and had a very tough time getting around the airport, hotel, and event, even though my vision was substantially better than today – between 20/80 – 20/100.)

Fortunately, after an email to #ASE10, I was able to work something out on entry fee for Eliz by providing a letter from one of my eye doctors. Conveniently, I had an appointment with Dr. Ayres, the cornea specialist this past week and he agreed to write the letter for me (more on the appointment later.) I’d like to thank Amy from Affiliate Summit for all her help!

The big question was about the kids. Do we take them and let them take in the sights of NYC on their own? The Museum of Modern Art is across the street from where the event will be held and 5th Ave is only a block away. The bottom line was that we didn’t feel comfortable with that and thought it would be too great of a distraction for us. We’ll take the kids back another time. Eliz’s mother (Grandmere to the kids) will sleep here the two nights we won’t be here. She’ll also grab dinner for them. As she says, she’ll supervise not babysit.

So, along with doing my normal routine of communicating with customers, updating shipping status’, and helping Eliz with the heavier deliveries, I was also constantly checking Hotels.com (Hotels.com by city, dates and number of guests) for a place to stay since I missed out on the good deals through the event at the New York Hilton, where the event is being held. I just couldn’t pay $400 per night plus taxes to stay there… So, the post is sponsored by Hotels.com.

I also had a few things to do for <a href="http://www.dgdesign.net" title=
Digital Graphics Design, Media's premier web development firm specializing in e-commerce development, corporate identity, and web hosting solutions."> Digital Graphics Design. The main item was end of the month invoicing. We had picked up a couple more hosting accounts, plus Dan had completed some updates for current clients. While my title is president, my actions are primarily as bookkeeper… Dan did get a lead for an e-commerce, so Dan, Ken, and I kicked around pricing for that after doing some research on what the prospective client wants. Keep your fingers crossed… In other spare time, I’ve been helping a friend who just opened a shop by creating a logo and working on a website for her. I really miss doing that, but I don’t feel my work is up to par to actually charge for it.

This past Wednesday afternoon, I had an appointment with Dr. Ayres, as I mentioned above. There wasn’t much of a change. The eye chart seemed a bit blurrier than at my appointment a few weeks earlier with Dr. Garg. I could read the E, but the S in the SL line was difficult for me. I’m not sure if I would’ve been able to read it if I didn’t know what it was. Dr. Ayres had a look and we spoke about the fluctuation in my vision. He had Gordon do some sort of scan to measure my cornea. They used a machine they were trying out and he hoped that he’d still have it at my next appointment to get another scan at a different time of day. Looking into the machine, I saw what looked like one of the flowers on the Mystery Machine. Zoinks! While I was having the scan done, Eliz asked Dr. Ayres about writing the letter for the Affiliate Summit. When we returned to Pod 2 (I still don’t know why they don’t call them EyePod 1, 2, and 3…) Dr Ayres and I talked about the letter. He told me to continue on the eye drops and come back in six weeks, in the morning. So while there weren’t any miraculous breakthroughs on why my vision can’t get back to where it was just after the surgery in mid-April, I wasn’t really expecting too much and my IOP remains stead at eight, which is good considering it could get wacky (cuckoo bananas?) because of the drops that I’m on. As promised, Dr. Ayres had the letter to me by the next morning.

It’ll be interesting to see if this week is as frantic as last week. Since both kids are away, it will certainly be more quiet here.

Had a 9.00am appointment yesterday (Friday, 9 July) with my glaucoma doctor at Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia. We usually schedule appointments that early for the cornea and retina doc’s in Bala, since Jane’s school is on the way and we can drop her off, so I guess we were in that frame of mind when we made the appointment (because Jane has been on summer break for a month…) I’m not sure why I even needed this appointment since I was just there in May.

We left the house at 8.15am and traffic was surprisingly light. Even the road work on the Girard Point Bridge didn’t slow us down. Things were going great until we were about 25 yards from the parking garage at Wills Eye. A minivan was at the entrance and the driver seemed like she didn’t want to go in. Once she noticed us, she proceeded slowly. She got her parking ticket out of the machine and continued very slowly up into the garage. We always like to park on the top floor, which is the seventh, because it is the only floor that you don’t have to go to the ground floor, get off the elevator, and then get on a different elevator. On seven, you walk right into the hospital and grab an elevator to either nine (low vision,) ten (cornea,) or eleven (glaucoma.)

Anyway, after a couple of floors, this lady has a parade of cars behind her. She sees an open spot and tries to park. She pulls in at the wrong angle and sees she will hit the car on her left. Backs up, but doesn’t change her turn at all. Tries to pull in exactly the same way, then backs up again because she sees she still doesn’t have clearance on her left. Horns start honking. People start yelling. She then just stops. Seriously. I ask, “Who’s driving that car, Stevie Wonder?” She is in the middle of the driveway, blocking us and everyone behind us. More honking. More yelling. Eliz did neither. She pulls away from the space to give us and everyone else room to get past her. At this point, I’m regretting coming to this appointment. We get to seven and head inside.

We sign-in on the eleventh floor and have a seat. Eliz starts to read out the letters for the word scramble in the newspaper. My mind is not in shape for figuring these out (I was up until 2.30am researching colognes, perfumes, and other hair and skin care products that can be drop shipped to our customers — watch for them soon on ForYourSalon.com.) After a couple of minutes we get called to the desk to confirm my info and to pay the copay. As the receptionist is running our credit card (we always pay by credit card at doctors’ appointments because we’ve been burned in the past by having to prove we paid,) she is distracted from another receptionist talking on her mobile phone. She realizes as she’s handing Eliz the slip to sign that she charged us $25, not the correct amount of $20. ”Oh, I’m sorry, I’ve charged you $25. You don’t mind if we just put the extra $5 on your account, do you? It really is a pain to void it,” she says. Eliz says okay and signs the slip. We head back to the waiting area. I’m more annoyed now. I’m not sure if it was just the receptionist I was annoyed with or me for not saying anything about it. Eliz and I discuss what just happened and then Eliz starts back on the sudoku. I close my eyes and wait to be called back.

After some time, we get called and head to a room. The tech takes us to a room we’ve never been in and begins to ask how things are going. I tell her the same old story. She then asks about my meds. I begin to tell her about the eye drops I’m on, while she is reading the meds that were written in my chart from the last appointment. She interrupts me before I get one med out of my mouth. She says, “Are you still on Predforte?” I answer no and again begin to tell her what I’m on. She interrupts again asks about another steroid, similar to Predforte (but not the one I’m on.) Again, I say no and say I’m on Durezol, but pronounce it Durzol. She then says, “Do you mean…” and says something with about something that begins with a “D,” but is about six syllables longer than Dur ez ol. Eliz and I say no. This goes on for another couple of minutes and we move on to the next eye drop. Since it is the newest one, I had ripped the top of the box off and brought it with since I couldn’t see to read the name. I then have to explain to her several times how it is applied (though it is an eye drop, the cornea doc told me to put it on my finger — it is very thick — and, with my eye closed, rub it along the seam where my lids meet.) She wasn’t getting it… The last eye drop was an easy one. She writes it down and has a look at my eyes.

She asks me to cover my left eye while she shines a light into my right. She asks if I can see it, which I can. She moves the light back a foot or two and asks again. This time I can’t see it. Okay, now onto the left eye and the eye chart. I was happy that it was a different chart, one I haven’t memorized. ”Do you see that,” she asks while showing the big E. I tell her yes, it is the E. The next line was a C and a D, which I also am able to read. I can’t really see the next line, so she hands me the pinholes. Still no luck. She says okay and takes the pinholes from me and writes somethings in my chart. While she’s doing this, I continue to try to see the 20/100 line. One of the letters in the middle looks like an H or an N. I ask if that is true and she says, “Yes, it’s an H. I’ll give you a plus one.” Hooray. We then have to go back to the waiting room until there is a room the doctor can see us in. I’m happy to get away from that know-it-all tech.

After a short wait, we head to a different exam room. The tech this time is William, who is 43057895743759385473% better than the first tech, puts some drops in my eyes and Dr. Pro walks in. He greets us and asks me a few questions. The first couple of answers where fairly short, like, “yeah, it is about the same as the last time I was here.” He then asks me another question, but after I say about five words, he begins talking to William. I stop talking. He says go on. I start again and he starts talking to William again. He says continue, but after a few words, his mobile goes off and he checks it to see that it is a doctor that he needs info from (Eliz later told me that he had an emergency surgery scheduled at 10.30am, so it probably had to do with that.) He hands the phone to William to get the info and asks me to put my head in the machine so he can have a look. Let’s face it, I really didn’t have anything good to say, and even if I did, I don’t think he was really interested. He has a look and then takes the IOP of each eye (13 in the right, 8 in the left.) William has finished on the phone and Dr. Pro starts giving him the info of what he saw in my eyes (besides the blank stare back.)

Dr. Pro then tells me things on the glaucoma side look good. He says he believes the vision issues I’m having aren’t glaucoma related and it is best for Dr. Ayres (cornea) and Dr. Garg (retina) to figure out was the issue is. News flash, no one seems to know why my vision came around for those ten days in April after the surgery and then went bye-bye. Not me, my doctors, or even that voodoo woman named Phyllis. We shake hands and head to a different reception desk to checkout.

We get to the desk and the receptionist is finishing up with a woman. When she is done, she says to us, “I’ll be right with you, I’ve just have to send a fax to a doctor.” Her tone made me believe she meant: You’re done, you’re not as important as a doctor, so just wait a few minutes. After about five minutes, she starts to help us, but notices the lady before us is still there. The receptionist asks her if she had a question. The lady says she was just waiting for an appointment card for her next visit. The receptionist apologized for not giving her one and writes one out for her. Now it is our turn. She reads the form Eliz handed her and says, “You’ll have to call back on Monday. The doctor wants you to have a Fields test and I can’t schedule that now.” So, we wasted our time standing there waiting.

Let’s recap: We wasted nearly three hours (an hour and a half at Wills, plus travel time to and from) on this appointment and wasted over $43 (the $20 copay, the $5 credit we’ll supposedly get for next time, and over $18 for parking — that is with validation, otherwise it would have been $22.) I told Jake the night before it was going to be a waste of time. I only wish I could use these Nostradamus powers to select the correct Powerball numbers.

I haven’t posted an update for about three weeks. In that time, my vision still sucks and I’m wondering if I made the right choice to have the surgery. I visited the retina specialist on Tuesday and was told that there isn’t much difference on the macular edema from the last visit about a month ago (and that was only slightly different from earlier this year.) Seems a bit odd since during my appointment in May, he was able to point out the differences with my OCT scan then and the one earlier this year. I was also told that I had a bit of swelling in my cornea (cornea edema.) I don’t recall if that was an issue at my last cornea doc visit, but I’m scheduled to visit him this coming Tuesday (22 June,) so I’ll ask. At this point, my vision seems to fluctuate between slightly better than before the surgery to worse than before the surgery.

It is so frustrating to me that nothing can be done to get me back to where I was just days after the surgery. For about 10 days from 18 April, my vision was the best it had been in years. Seems now like that was a cruel tease. I’m getting tired of running to the doctors multiple times per month and not making progress.

In other news, Jacob is in Japan with a group of students from Westtown. The last few days they’ve stayed in Kyoto and taken day trips by rail to other cities and sites (Hiroshima, Miyagima-guchi, Miyagima, Kinkaku-ji.) Sunday, they move on to Tokyo where they meet their host families and prepare for a week at Tamagawa, Westtown’s sister school in Japan. The family Jake is staying with has a boy a year or two younger than Jake and seems to live a bit of distance away from the school. Eliz and I hope Jake can manage the train transfers…

Jane is looking forward to meeting her favorite band All Time Low on Sunday at meet and greet during The Bamboozle Roadshow. Monday, she heads to softball camp at Villanova for a week. She is also doing two weeks at an overnight camp at Bryn Mawr College in July and going to the Outer Banks in August with Margaret, Meghan, and Chris. Did I mention she spent yesterday (Thursday) in New York with her friend Rachel?

Since Eliz and Jane won’t be here on Sunday, I’m planning a day of football… Well, at least the last two games (Azzurri/All Whites and Brazil/Ivory Coast (sorry Slovakia/Paraguay, I’m not rolling out of bed at 7.30am.) So, if you want to watch some footie, come on over!

Finally, I’ve lost another pound, which I am trying not to do. I’m trying to maintain 163 pounds, but have been between 161 and 162 the last couple of days. I’ve bumped to 1800 calories per day (from 1700) to try not to lose any additional weight. It’s been tough this week, because we’ve eaten out four times and I’ve had to estimate my calories once and calculate my calories after the fact another time. By the time I added ‘em up, I was short by 200 calories (ate 1600 calories) and it was too late to have anything else if I wanted to go to sleep by 2.00am. At 161, I’m down 73 pounds since I started on 10 December 2009.

More next week, after my cornea doc appointment.

Since Wednesday or Thursday, I’ve noticed that my vision didn’t seem to be as good as it was earlier in the week. By Friday, after talking with Eliz, we decided it was probably a good idea to try and visit Dr. Ayres, the surgeon that removed the cataract (and performed the endothelial transplant in Dec. ’08.) Fortunately, they were able to squeeze me into their busy schedule at Wills Eye at noon on Friday.

We didn’t have to wait long in the waiting room. I was very curious about reading the chart. The E was not a problem. I could see the SL on the next line, but it didn’t seem as sharp as my previous appointment about 10 days earlier. I could not read the OPLB line. That was a step backward.

When Dr. Ayres came in, I told him about what was going on. He took a look and said everything seemed about the same as my previous appointment. No signs of retina detachment, the new lens was still in place, and there was no signs of rejection on the previously transplanted endothelia. My IOP was at seven, which was down from 10 at my previous appointment. As he put it, the good news is that it is not a problem from the surgery, but that means I don’t really have any way of fixing the issue. He prescribed a non-steroidal eye drop just in case there was a little swelling that he didn’t notice. He said it was like Advil in drop form.

On Tuesday I have a scheduled appointment with Dr. Pro, who is my glaucoma doctor. I want to have a Fields test, because one of the things I have noticed is more blind spots, especially in my central vision. Hopefully, he’ll find something that can be corrected.

So, it seems I’ve missed my opportunity to go to the movies or a Phillies game. It might also be time to learn how to do things without much sight. I was waiting for the surgery before I tried anything new, but I think it is time.

I figured that I’ve gone through enough eye surgeries that I can label them in roman numerals. In fact, if I had some time, I’d probably do this post on video, with cool graphics and theme music like a championship game post game show. Here it is, without video, cool graphics, awesome theme music, and John Fecenda doing the voiceover:

Welcome to the Hotels.com EyeOp XIV Report. We’ll take you through the entire operation from warm-ups to the very end. The patient walked in relaxed and comfortable, but lacking any fashion sense in a button down Tigger shirt, grey sweatpants, and sneakers. At check-in, he was informed of a last-second audible that there would be no transplant on this day, just the cataract extraction. Not flustered by the surprising news, he moved to the waiting area and went through the word scrambles as quickly as Eliz could read him the letters. Then, his number was called. It was time.

In the prep area, he relaxed while Lisa went over the plan and put some “face paint” above his left eye. There wasn’t a flinch when she put the IV into his left hand. After a brief meeting with the surgeon, Dr. Ayres — where additional “face paint” was added above the left eye and a reason was given for not being prepared to do the partial cornea transplant (if it wasn’t needed, the tissue would have been wasted) — Dr. Curtis came over to start the IV. She remarked that the patient already looked relaxed and sleepy before starting the IV.

At 11:06 am, the players took the field. The patient was so very comfortable, only spoke to the doctor once or twice and enjoyed “twilight” (minus the vampires.) Within 30 to 45 minutes there was a pat on the shoulder from Dr. Ayers and it was off to recovery. After a grueling victory, the patient celebrated was a cool cup of water and an apple cinnamon bar. He was given last minute instructions (keep the shield on, don’t get water — or anything else — in the eye, take 12 eye drops per day, etc,) and put his chai (jewish symbol for life, not spiced Indian tea) necklace back on. Three hours after arriving, it was time to go home.

The 1-800 Contacts Great Sight of the Day was everything outside! The grass and the trees looked greener. The buildings had depth and dimension. Some signs on buildings could be read. So far, so good.

So that’s how the Hotels.com EyeOp XIV Report would end. But the healing continues. This morning, on our way to the first post op appointment, I was able to see more signs on buildings and stores and read some advertising on buses. At my appointment, the doctor said everything looked good and I was able to read some of the 20/100 line without the pinholes. I was even able to read the A in the CAV8 (20/80) line with the pinholes! The other good news is that I only have to wear the plastic eye shield to bed. I can also resume ALL normal activities on Monday (until then, no heavy lifting, gardening, or other strenuous activities.)

I watched some of the Flyers and Phillies games tonight. Wow! I was amazed at how much I could follow the play in the Flyers game. I could see the score and time left in the period without getting up off the floor (where I lay, propped up on my left elbow to watch TV.) Even the Phillies game looked good, though it wasn’t in HD since we have Fios. I could see the rain pouring down on Halliday… I was disappointed we didn’t get to Jacob’s lax game before the rain came. We were in traffic on 202 after our delivery in Wilmington. My next chance at live sports is Jane’s softball game on Monday.

I am pleased with the results thus far. I believe I’ll be able to follow a movie on the big screen. Maybe we’ll try that next weekend. I am looking forward to trying things that I haven’t been able to do for many years.

I’ve been on the eye drop Xibrom for about 10 days now, along with an increase in the number of times per day I take Predforte (from 1x per day to 3x per day.) Not only hasn’t this regimen helped, but my vision continues to deteriorate. I visit the retina doc in about a month and the cornea doc a week later. I’m beginning to wonder what kind of shape my vision will be in at that point. It can’t be that my local ophthalmologist, the glaucoma specialist, cornea specialist, and retina specialist all missed something, could it?

I had a blood test last week to test for a whole bunch of things including Lyme disease, diabetes. According to the less than warm and fuzzy card I received in the mail on Saturday from my doctor’s office, everything was normal. I have to tell you that I get more personalized mail from Publishers Clearing House. I was kind of hoping there would be something in the blood test that might give a clue to my vision. No luck. I will call my doctor tomorrow to see if she can elaborate further on my test.

At this point, I’m also wondering about what to do about making a living. I would love to try to continue to build ForYourSalon.com, but that has become increasingly more difficult for me to do. I haven’t really worked for anyone but myself and Eliz since 1985. What could I do? More importantly, who would hire me? I’m interested in your opinion. Comment here or over at Facebook (www.facebook.com/davidbenj) if you are a friend.
