For those who don’t follow me on Twitter (@davidbenj) or Facebook (facebook.com/davidbenj) you might not know what I’ve been up to the last few weeks. You may also be wondering why I haven’t updated my blog since Father’s Day. Here’s the story, and like my previous blog post it has to do with my dad.

On 30 June my dad fell and broke the fourth cervical vertebrae. He also sustained some wicked cuts on his forehead and the bridge of his nose. The doctors also thought he had a concussion. For the first 12 days, he was in the hospital, then he moved to a skilled nursing facility so he could do physical therapy. It has been difficult on all of us. Eliz, my mom, and I have spent many hours at the hospital and skilled nursing facility. At least one of us was with him from around 10.00am until 8.00pm. Some days a little more and a couple days a little less. Eliz has spent more time in the car, ferrying my mom to the hospital in the morning and taking her home at the end of the day. We’ve put about 1300 miles on the car since my dad entered the hospital, which is about 35% above what we normally average for a time period.

For the first week, my dad had a very restricting cervical collar and was unable to eat or drink. Even swallowing was extremely difficult. Once he received his current collar, he began eating and drinking again. Anything he eats has to be soft or pureed. Let me tell you, pureed lasagna is not pretty. Liquids have to be thickened. At the hospital and skilled nursing facility, this, of course, was all prepared for him.

My dad was discharged from the skilled nursing facility yesterday and all of us were happy, though my dad was a bit worried. “Who’s going to do all of the things the nurses did for me?” he asked. My mom told him she would. Eliz and I lend a hand too.

The toughest part is the food. Everything has to be pureed. Unfortunately, the normal food isn’t that great at Maris Grove, so my parents didn’t want to pay extra to have “special” food brought in for my dad. So my mom gives Eliz and I a list and we go to the market for her. I’m pretty sure I’d be living on fruit smoothies and protein drinks, because things like pureed chicken just aren’t appetizing to me. We also help my dad walk around the apartment, though with each passing day he is relying on us a little less. Today, he walked from the den to the kitchen, rinsed out a glass and then walked into the bedroom. He never called for my mom to help him. The physical therapist said he shouldn’t walk without having someone close by.

We only spent a couple of hours with my parents today after running to Fresh Market and Acme for them. My dad was in good shape today and seems to be getting stronger everyday. My mom is happy that he is home and doesn’t mind blending everything. Now I’m looking for a Super Bass-O-Matic 76…

As you’ve read here over the past seven weeks, I’ve been pretty frustrated and miserable. On the way to my my cornea specialist, Eliz and I were talking about what I was planning on discussing with Dr. Ayres. I was going to tell him how tired I was running back and forth to all these eye specialists who couldn’t really figure out why my vision had deteriorated to 20/200 (close to my pre-surgery acuity) after I was able to read most of the 20/100 line a week after the surgery. I was also going to ask Dr. Ayres to ease off some of the drops. I was up to about 8 to 10 per day, and after some, my vision was blurry for varying lengths of time, reducing my vision further.

So we’re driving down Lancaster Ave. after dropping Jane at softball camp at Villanova and we turn on Preston and Steve on WMMR (Eliz is a huge fan.) They were talking about some guy who was trying to get into the Guinness Book of Records by singing the lowest note ever. The discussion somehow turned to the Oak Ridge Boys and their hit Elvira (warning, don’t click the link, you won’t be able to get the song out of your head…) They were talking about how deep one of the members of the band could sing, were making fun of the song and then mentioning that one of the members was from Collingswood, NJ (it is in southern New Jersey.) I was laughing so hard I was crying. Tears were streaming down my face for over five minutes. When they finally stopped, we were just passing St. Joe’s on City Ave. I grabbed a tissue and wiped my eyes and began to look around. Things looked clearer to me. We stopped at a red light and I looked at the trees and buildings and told Eliz that things looked better than before the tears flowed.

We were only a minute or two away (his office is on Presidential Blvd. in the Pagoda Building, just off City Ave.) We sat in the car for a minute or two since we were early. I looked at the building and the trees and things still looked better. Once we walked in, things were still tough to see inside. We took the elevator to his office and signed in. Eliz grabbed a magazine and started looking through it. I glanced at the front cover, but couldn’t make out the title, so I thought my vision was returning to its current normal. After a few minutes, I was called back to Pod 3 (which I suggested on multiple occasions to rename EyePod 3.) Tia was the name of the tech and she questioned me about what meds I’ve been taking and how my vision was doing. Then she turned on the eye chart. E looked clearer. So did SL. I was then able to make out the L first, then the P in the OPLB line. (As I’ve mentioned before, I know all the lines down to DAO6, the 20/60 line, so I’m never 100% sure I’m actually seeing them.) There is no alternative 20/100 line other then the OPLB line, like there are for the 20/80 line and better, so I was given credit for seeing the P and the L. With the pinholes, I tried both the CAV8 (20/80) line and its numerical alternative without being able to read anything.

Dr. Ayres came in a few minutes later and I told him about what happened on the way into the appointment. He then took a look and had me blink twice. He noticed that my eye was losing the tear film in about five seconds (he didn’t use a stopwatch, instead opting for the technical Philadelphia, as in one Philadelphia, two Philadelphia, etc. We always used Mississippi when we played football as kids. You could blitz on five Mississippi…) He then explained to Eliz and I that 10 seconds is the norm for the tear film to last after blinking. I’m not surprised that my eyes aren’t normal. Never have been, never will be. He also mentioned that once the eye begins to dry, the visual acuity begins to fall. He gave me more drops, over the counter lubricating drops for during the day, and a prescription for a drop to use at bedtime. It is an antibiotic that evidently is somewhat thick. It is used for infections in the eye, but I was instructed to close my eye and massage it onto the edge of my upper and lower lids. I’ll let you know how that goes in a few days since I haven’t used it yet. Dr. Ayres also took me off one of the steroid drops (two less drops per day) and Muro 128 (four times per day.)

Can it be that at least part of my current eye issues were discovered because of Preston and Steve? Yup! So, thank you Preston and Steve (and Kathy, Casey, Nick, Marisa, the Oak Ridge Boys, and that guy trying to sing the lowest note!) Now I just have to hope that the new drop works. Wish me luck (again…)

I was looking forward to my second visit to Dr. Ayres since the surgery on 15 April. The last few days have been trying. I began to notice that my vision was changing. I was getting a bit nervous as I was having difficulties seeing things close to me and up to five to 10 feet away. Some of the problems, I figured, had to do with my eye healing and changing. The eye drop regimen also could play a part in my vision.

While we were in the waiting room, Eliz and I did the word scrambles in the Inquirer (her mother gives that section to us after she finished the crossword puzzle, so we usually have a few days of scrambles to do.) I realized today while we were doing the scrambles that I am a visual thinker when it comes to these puzzles. That is not good since I can’t see the puzzles at all. I have no trouble doing math in my head without seeing the numbers, but I am slow, usually, with the words. I do occasionally get the words before Eliz, but she is usually quicker than I am.

After completing three puzzles, we were called back to Pod 2. I was able to read the OBLB (20/100) line, though it didn’t seem as crisp as it did the day after the surgery. The pinholes brought it into focus, but I couldn’t read any of the CAV8 (20/80) line. Dr. Ayres came in and had a look. He said things looked very good. My IOP was up to 10 (which is higher for me than normal,) but he believes it is from the steroid drops that I was taking four times a day and believes that will fall back a few notches as I lower the amount of those drops (I take them three times per day for the next week and then two times per day until I see him on 21 May.) I hope he is correct about the pressure…

After he finished looking, we talked about what is going on with my vision. I told him of my difficulties seeing things close to me and the trouble I had since the weekend even on the computer. He apologized about not giving me the whole story before the surgery and said that the lens he put in was for distance. I told him I was happy with how I could see things in better detail than before. He explained that, like a person 10 to 15 years older than me, I had lost the ability to focus at things close up. He hoped that the problem could be fixed with glasses, but it was too soon for that since my eye is still healing and will continue to change as it does.

I brought the pair of reading glasses I’d been using since the surgery to read on the computer and see food on my plate so he could check the strength. I’ve used several different magnifications since the transplant in December ’08 and I wasn’t sure which pair these were. I was also concerned, since they were less effective over the last few days. Fortunately, they were 3.5X. I knew that I had a pair of 4x glasses at home, somewhere. When we got home, I found them and was relieved that they made reading my screen much more comfortable than the 3.5X pair. I hoping I don’t need to go up to 5X, but they would still be cheaper than prescription glasses. They will do a refraction at my next visit on 21 May.

I don’t know if it was the 4X reading glasses or what Dr. Ayres had to say about how good things looked, but it seems that I can see better after the appointment. I only have to wait two weeks before I see my glaucoma specialist, so we’ll see how the IOP is doing then. I’d also like to get a fields test to see how that has changed since the surgery. Maybe I can have that done then too. I’ll post it here on the blog if I have it done…

Generally, I’m happy with the results so far. Eliz and I may go to the movies this weekend (her birthday is Saturday and she’s requested Mexican Post for dinner, then a movie at Regal across the street.) Jane’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah schedule (six in the next eight weeks) may force us to reschedule… I tried to help Eliz prepare some parts of dinner tonight, with limited success. Shooting pictures and video is something I’d like to try soon. I tried taking a picture a day or two after the surgery, but couldn’t see well enough through the viewfinder. I may have to leave the lcd screen on for pics and videos to be usable… For now, lets see what tomorrow brings.

I’ve been waiting for this week since the end of January, because I’m going to see the retina specialist on Friday. I’m hoping he can do a PAM test on me. No, it’s not part of the Aunt Jemima treatment, it stands for potential acuity meter. It will let me, and, more importantly, my team of eye specialists know how much of the “current” vision loss is due to the cataract in my left eye. I would hope it would come back 20/200 or better. If not, it might be time to rent a gun and buy a bullet. (Relax, I’m only joking. I’m worth far too much dead to take my own life.) Even without a PAM test, I’m hoping that Dr. Garg (retina) will give the okay for me to have Dr. Ayers (cornea) takeout the cataract. As much as I’ve loved the snow this winter, I don’t want it to foul up my 8:45am appointment in Bala on Friday. I see Dr. Ayers on 3 March and I’d like to schedule the cataract surgery then. I’ve gotta do something, it seems like my vision is getting worse by the day. My frustration level is extremely high.

On Wednesday, I’ve got an appointment with my GP. It was postponed from 10 Feb due to the little bit of snow we had (not to mention the lack of power and heat too.) When I saw Dr. Rist on 9 Dec, she told me to lose weight. Since then I’ve eaten only about 1500 calories per day. On days that I did some physical work like shovel snow, move our store inventory, etc., I would eat more calories as a reward. As of this morning, I am down 41 pounds. I’m interested to see what she says.

Jake is spending the week living at school, something he will have to do for his junior and senior years at Westtown. We dropped him off on Sunday and will pick him up this Sunday. He was really looking forward to it. Then, when we got there, he noticed a Super Nintendo game system (circa 1991.) The seniors whose room he and his friend are staying in left them a note saying that they could play with the system. We have a couple of games from the video store that Jake has always wanted to play, but we never had the system (well, we had it, but upgraded to something else before he was born.) I’m worried that school work might not be first on his mind this week. Eliz picked him up some candy from BJ’s the other day. You know, BJ’s doesn’t sell anything in small amounts. She got him a variety bag of candy bars (not the fun size, the normal size) and a bag with god know how many packages of Skittles in it. He posted today on Facebook that he was selling the candy. Prices were $.50 for candy available in the school store and $1.00 for candy not carried in the school store. I’m interested to see what he does with the funds, though his intentions could be philanthropic.

Jane found her letters from Tabitha tonight. Tabitha was conjured up when Jake literally lost his first tooth. It either fell out onto the ground or he swallowed it with his lunch that day at Granite Run Mall. He was disappointed because he was so looking forward to putting it under his pillow for the toothfairy. That night, after he went to bed, I wrote a letter from Tabitha, a toothfair from the North American office. I expected it to be a one and done sort of thing, but when he lost his next tooth, we was just as excited to get another letter as he was to get the money. And of course, if you do it for one, the other has to have it too… Jane actually got a letter or two before she even lost a tooth. She would sometimes leave notes for Tabitha under her pillow. Jane laughs at the letters now, but she had fun reading them tonight. She said each one had a little education, like Sesame Street. I also would include things that I thought would boost their confidence and nudges on nutrition. One day I’ll post them or publish them.

It is amazing how easy 700 words comes off my fingertips these days… So much for a short update. More later this week on the retina appointment.

Back on 9 Dec 2009, my doctor told me to join Weight Watchers or do some other diet program. I told her that it would not happen. We were in the process of boxing up the inventory at our business location in the Delcroft Shopping Center (you all know the one: lots of water, super high levels of hazardous mold, and mushrooms growing out of the carpet.) My doctor and I went back and forth and she told me that I had to lose weight. She told me I could try on my own by eating 1500 calories per day. Okay, I’ll do it. I don’t know if she believed me or not.

The next day, I started counting every calorie. Before we go out for dinner, I look up the calories at the restaurant we’d like to go to eat. If the restaurant doesn’t have the calories listed on their site, we usually pick a place that does instead (and go to the place that doesn’t list the calories only after doing some strenuous activity which would give me some extra calories to eat.) I usually eat a salad for lunch, which consists of a bag of Fresh Express or a similar brand, some mushrooms, sometimes some peppers, sometimes some walnuts, and either balsamic vinegar or a low-fat dressing. Breakfast is either two Dannon Fruit-on-the-Bottom yogurts (280-300 calories total,) McCann’s Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal (two servings = 300 calories,) or two eggs with low-fat cheese (about 240 calories.)

Dinners are are anywhere from 500 to 800 calories (unless I’ve been doing some physical labor…) It was apparent early on that I couldn’t do this without knowing some foods serving size. Sure, a Gardenburger on a Martin’s roll with the low-fat Cracker Barrel cheese was easy to figure out (100+140+80=320,) but what about a serving of walnuts? So I bought a scale from Amazon.com. So, back to the walnuts. I serving is 180 calories. Serving size is 30 grams. 30 grams is a better than average handful of walnuts! Half a serving will do on my salad…

Snacks include blueberries, grapes, celery with salsa, raspberries, blackberries, an apple, a grapefruit, cassava chips (these — available from Whole Foods – are my fav,) pretzels (both gluten-free and regular,) pumpkin seeds and air-popped popcorn. Grapes are my single most favorite food. It is absolutely horrifying how many I used to eat as a snack at night. Now I usually have 100g-200g, depending on how many calories I’ve got left to “spend.” The other fruits I’ve mentioned also are things that I used to snack on before and have just lowered the amount I eat at a given time.

I have always drank plenty of water, between two and three litres per day, which I still do. I also drink hot tea in the morning (a Teavana blend,) and evening (Stash Lemongrass and Ginger Tea, Eliz’s fav and sometimes hard to find.) I don’t add anything to either of those “cups” of tea. In the afternoon, I sometimes have either Red Rose black tea hot or cold. I add lemon juice from half a lemon. If I’ve got 50 calories to spare, I might add honey to the hot tea.

There are certainly things I haven’t had since I started the 1500 calories per day. Some I miss, like the Apple Chai Infusion from Starbucks. Maybe once I work some exercise into my daily routine, I can get that again…

My goal is to continue at the 1500 calories per day for as long as I can take it (and Eliz and the kids can take me…) I’m not sure why I’m doing this. I think it is more for the challenge than being fat. I don’t think that I’ve felt any better or worse since I started losing the weight, but I have noticed that I have more energy. I still get a little more than five hours of sleep per night, except on the weekends when I sometimes get eight or nine hours. I’ve already gone from my clothes being snug to just right to I-might-need-smaller-size. I guess I can still do somethings…

I’ve been on the eye drop Xibrom for about 10 days now, along with an increase in the number of times per day I take Predforte (from 1x per day to 3x per day.) Not only hasn’t this regimen helped, but my vision continues to deteriorate. I visit the retina doc in about a month and the cornea doc a week later. I’m beginning to wonder what kind of shape my vision will be in at that point. It can’t be that my local ophthalmologist, the glaucoma specialist, cornea specialist, and retina specialist all missed something, could it?

I had a blood test last week to test for a whole bunch of things including Lyme disease, diabetes. According to the less than warm and fuzzy card I received in the mail on Saturday from my doctor’s office, everything was normal. I have to tell you that I get more personalized mail from Publishers Clearing House. I was kind of hoping there would be something in the blood test that might give a clue to my vision. No luck. I will call my doctor tomorrow to see if she can elaborate further on my test.

At this point, I’m also wondering about what to do about making a living. I would love to try to continue to build ForYourSalon.com, but that has become increasingly more difficult for me to do. I haven’t really worked for anyone but myself and Eliz since 1985. What could I do? More importantly, who would hire me? I’m interested in your opinion. Comment here or over at Facebook (www.facebook.com/davidbenj) if you are a friend.

My family gets pretty annoyed with me at this time of year. They get tired or hearing “This is the last time in 2009 that I…” So, to all my readers — yes, all three of you — this is the last time in 2009 that I’ll post in my blog. Not to worry, I’m sure I’ll have a few things to say over on facebook throughout the day today as we try to get everything out of our petri dish of a building. It is going to be a long day.

To prepare for our move out, we’ve been cleaning our home office. That will become the center of our business. Our plan is operate ForYourSalon.com and continue to serve our local customers (salons, barbershops, spas, senior care facilities, and individual stylists,) delivering their orders to them. Delivering to our customers isn’t new, our top 10 customers never set foot into our building. They would simply phone or fax their orders in. Our challenge will be to convert those customers who would come into the store multiple times per week (some, multiple times per day) because we were close by. It won’t be easy, but it is better than spending all day in that building with all the mold and mushrooms.

As were cleaning the office, we’re coming across things that we should have thrown out or recycled long ago. Like tickets, with parking, to the 2003 NHL Eastern Conference Finals. The Flyers were bounced in the semis by Ottawa. I didn’t go to any of the playoffs that year, or since. I had eye surgery in February that year and only went to one game after it as a season ticket holder (it was 1 April vs. Columbus — Jeremy Roenick bobble head night. Eliz and I stayed until the end of the first period when it was clear I’d have a better chance at growing new hair on my bald head than I would seeing the game.) Then there’s the Dreamweaver 2.0 guide, complete with a 3 1/2″ floppy disk! You would have thought that I would have gotten rid of that after I purchase the Dreamweaver 3.0 Bible or the Dreamweaver MX 2004 book. That scenario repeated over and over again with Photoshop, Illustrator, QuarkXpress, and a few other programs. Why I still have the box and manual to the Canon A40 I purchased in 2002 is beyond me. I guess I wanted to take advantage of the whopping two megapixels. It is amazing what we’ve saved over the years.

I’m looking forward to turning the page to 2010; I wish you a happy and healthy year. Of course, I’ll be back with a post in a day or two. That will be the first time in 2010 that I’ll post to my blog…

I don’t often write about good days here, but today was one of those days that I wanted to share with the world. It wasn’t exciting, extravagant, or exotic. Nor were the burdens that weigh on us every day removed. Today was a simple day spent together. It’d be a normal day if it happened more frequently, but we’ll have to take them one day at a time.

After lunch, we went to visit my parents. We do that every weekend and sometimes during the week if they need something. Today we took them a couple of rye breads, a frozen dinner they asked for, a box of Tastykake cupcakes courtesy of my friend Alex, and a couple of treats. While we’re visiting, we talk for awhile, watch TV, and help them any way we can. Usually, the kids and Eliz hang out with my mom, while I talk with my dad.

Today was a bit different because my mom was preparing dinner when we arrived, so we all kind of hung out in the kitchen and dinning area. When we arrived to their apartment, there was a gift on the shelf outside their door for my dad. After we went through all the stuff we brought for them, he opened the present. It was from a few ladies who my father taught to shoot pool. My parents both laughed as Eliz read who the pound of fudge was from. Between that gift, the treats we brought them, and the ice cream they have stashed in their freezer from the “cafe” down the hall, they should have enough sweets for a week or two.

After my mom had everything simmering on the stove, my parents, Eliz, and I went into the den, while the kids went into the bedroom to watch TV. We talked about Shavu’ot, a jewish holiday that Jake has to do a presentation on at school (which neither I or my parents knew anything about,) Jake’s decision to got to Japan with the Japanese club from Westtown, some trips we took when I was a kid, and business. We spent between and hour and a half and two hours visiting, then we headed across the street to Borders and then came home.

Since it is Hanukkah, we wanted to do one of our family traditions: make potato latkes. (The kids are being raised without religion, though they are exposed to both jewish and catholic traditions. If they want to pick a religion when they’re older, that’s up to them.) The best part of latkes this year was that both kids wanted to help in the preparation. They both peeled potatoes. Jake then cut them up for Jane to feed into the food processor for shredding. Eliz then grated the onion in the food processor. I added the other ingredients and cooked them. Jane later said she wanted to form some and cook them, so my cooking duties were over for the day. Don’t tell her, but she is better at cooking them than me… We then enjoyed them together, along with roasted turkey breast, at the dinner table.

Simply eating together at the dinner table is good. We don’t get to do it as often as we should. We all had a hand in making the latkes and spent real quality time with one another. Eliz and I both really enjoyed it.

No, I’m not looking into the future and the 2012 presidential election. I turned 45 the other day and, quite frankly, I’m hoping for a better year. At 45, how many good years are there going to be?

There was a great deal of promise when I turned 44 last November. I was having a very tough time seeing and surgery was scheduled for early December for a full cornea transplant or a partial cornea transplant (where only the endothelia is swapped out.) The hope was for the endothelial transplant, but that was to be determined during surgery. The surgeon was pretty optimistic that my vision would get to 20/100 or a tad bit better.

The result was the easier surgery, replacing only the endothelia, but vision that peaked at 20/200 in spring and then started going the wrong way by July. I can now see 20/400 in my good eye and none of my ophthalmologists can tell me what the problem is now. So the hopes and dreams from last Thanksgiving have been replaced by frustration and concern this year.

Then there is the business. When I turned 44, I had absolutely no idea what was going to become of our business, Salon Supplies + Interiors (see the two previous paragraphs.) Our lease at 1010 MacDade with the ganif (I am being too kind) was set to expire on 5 February. Once my doctor informed me that the surgery was “a success,” we tried to negotiate a one year lease at a lower rent. We were paying $3750 in rent, $1200 in taxes, and about $1100 for utilities on average per month. (Utilities varied from $800 to $2000 and were billed by the ganif, not Peco.)

Now the question was to move or close. I really wanted to launch ForYourSalon.com, which was suffering from massive delays (uh, yeah, my sight issues.) Thankfully, Ken came on-board full time and got it moving again. We looked at properties from the end of December to the third week in January, when we found our current location. It was perfect! It had a drive-in bay, a loading dock bay, and nearly 8,000 square feet. This place could accommodate our cabinet shop, used equipment department, new equipment showroom, and beauty supplies department. And the price was right too: $2,500 per month rent, no CAM charges, no taxes, and a utility bill that averages about $575 per month (highest was about $675 and lowest was about $350.)

We boxed all the supplies and moved everything in about five days. We had everything setup in the new place in about three weeks, though we only closed for three days during the move (the last day at the old location and the first two days at the new location.) The first few days at the new place were somewhat painful for me since we had so many different workers (moving temps, electricians, etc.) While my staff knew to keep things off the floor and away from traffic areas, the others did not. I walked into metal piping that was hanging out of the electricians truck by about three feet (the truck was parked in the warehouse.) It literally brought me to my knees.

So our predicament is very similar this year. Different building, different issues, with a move imminent. This year there is greater worry. The conditions of our “perfect” space began to worsen with every drop of rain that fell at the end of June. As water poured in every day or two over the summer, the mold and fungus began thriving. Samples taken by a mold remediation company in early November showed levels much higher than they should be. We will be out of the space within weeks (hopefully two weeks.)

Besides my sight, my general health hasn’t been good over the past year. I’ve had sinusitis multiple times since early summer. Hmmm, I wonder if it has to do with the mold… I am looking forward to evacuating that building and seeing if my health (and Eliz’s too) rebounds.

The immortal words of a great philosopher are always in the back of my mind, “It’s always something. If it’s not one thing, it’s another…” That said, I’m looking forward to a better year. I’ll let you know right after I turn 46.
