Last week, we invited my parents over for dinner. Eliz was making ribs on the grill, which both of them like, and there was more than plenty for all of us. (Jake ended up having a few, but Jane was okay to pass on them.) Two full racks and we still didn’t eat them all (though in eight months ago I probably would have finished them off.)

My parents hadn’t been here in a long time, since we usually go to them (and my mother doesn’t like doing the drive) and my dad has been interested in seeing our house again. He is becoming more forgetful over the past months, which even he recognizes. I have been complaining (hey, it’s what I do best) lately about the state of our house and he wanted to see it first hand, so we picked them up and brought them over.

Since we’ve moved Salon Supplies + Interiors and ForYourSalon.com out of the now condemned rental space in Folcroft and work it primarily from our home office, our home has been overwhelmed with computers, beauty supplies, and even some salon equipment (hydraulic styling chairs make a unique second row of seating to watch movies or sporting events on the big screen.) Anyway, as we receive orders from manufacturers and vendors, we bring them home, sort them, and add them to our inventory. If I walked into our kitchen at this moment, I’d be shocked if there wasn’t at least a couple of beauty related items in there, if not a case or three. (I had to look… Only one item in the kitchen — a bowl bracket for a Belvedere 3100 shampoo bowl which we are shipping via UPS Ground to Hawaii. I’m not sure how that works, but that’s another story.) Within arms length of me at this moment, there is a sample of Fabulous Hair Argan Oil Plus (which we may start selling) and Ship-Shape Liquid Professional Surface Cleaner (which has to be added to our inventory on ForYourSalon.com.)

My parents entered through our garage (which up until yesterday, we hadn’t parked in since late March) and noticed some of our inventory which doesn’t need climate control temps, but sells well enough to not have to run to Springfield (where we have some leased space) and bring it back to ship it. They also saw boxes of business documents from the past three or four years. Through in a few of our personal items like bikes, snow shovels, gardening tools, toys — well, you get the idea. Did I mention it is a three car garage? Of course, most of what my dad focused on was inventory. He was surprised. We walked through the laundry room into the kitchen and kids greeted us. The kids and my parents talked for a couple of minutes, then I continued to walk around the house with my dad. We’ve been here 17 years and we are well overdue for some new paint, new rugs, and a redo for the hardwood floors, which, even with his diminished eye sight, my dad noticed.

We walked out the front door and he had a look around the front and side yards, which our lawn guy had just taken care of the past week, so it looked nice. All along the way, I was near my dad making sure he didn’t trip over a root of a tree or into a flower bed. It seemed funny, because it is just like what Eliz or the kids do for me when we are out and about. The difference being that I’ve already stumbled on the root or into the flower bed or hit my head on a low branch and know where not to walk… As we headed back in the front door, I point out the small step onto the landing by the front door and then the step into the house.

Back inside, my dad wants a look upstairs. We go up the front stairs since there is two small landings (the backstairs is one long run and I wouldn’t have been comfortable heading up that way.) He looked in Jake’s room, then Jane’s, then our “guest” room. It really isn’t for guests, but has an elliptical machine, exercise bike, and four drying racks where we dry most of our clothes. He recognizes the bureau in there from our house in Wallingford. When we get to our bedroom, my dad also recognizes the wall units in the sitting area, also from our house in Wallingford. As we head back down the stairs, I want to stay close to my dad, but not too close where I might bump him or kick him (I have trouble judging distances and am constantly reaching further than I have to for door knobs, light switches, etc. and jamming my fingers.) We make it down safely, then eat dinner.

After dinner, he wants a look in the basement. There aren’t any handrails down those steps since we removed them to get some shelving down there. I walk in front of my dad and go down backwards so I can tell him where the landings are. I show him the inventory that we have there on one side of the basement, but not the 17 years of “stuff” on the other side. Eliz has the inventory side pretty organized at this point and my dad is amazed how it looks like a little warehouse.

We head back up the stairs, my dad, then me. Again, I’m close in case he stumbles. My dad is 92 and a fall for him could be catastrophic. I start thinking that me leading him around and trying to tell him about obstacles was like the blind leading the blind. Literally.

I haven’t posted an update for about three weeks. In that time, my vision still sucks and I’m wondering if I made the right choice to have the surgery. I visited the retina specialist on Tuesday and was told that there isn’t much difference on the macular edema from the last visit about a month ago (and that was only slightly different from earlier this year.) Seems a bit odd since during my appointment in May, he was able to point out the differences with my OCT scan then and the one earlier this year. I was also told that I had a bit of swelling in my cornea (cornea edema.) I don’t recall if that was an issue at my last cornea doc visit, but I’m scheduled to visit him this coming Tuesday (22 June,) so I’ll ask. At this point, my vision seems to fluctuate between slightly better than before the surgery to worse than before the surgery.

It is so frustrating to me that nothing can be done to get me back to where I was just days after the surgery. For about 10 days from 18 April, my vision was the best it had been in years. Seems now like that was a cruel tease. I’m getting tired of running to the doctors multiple times per month and not making progress.

In other news, Jacob is in Japan with a group of students from Westtown. The last few days they’ve stayed in Kyoto and taken day trips by rail to other cities and sites (Hiroshima, Miyagima-guchi, Miyagima, Kinkaku-ji.) Sunday, they move on to Tokyo where they meet their host families and prepare for a week at Tamagawa, Westtown’s sister school in Japan. The family Jake is staying with has a boy a year or two younger than Jake and seems to live a bit of distance away from the school. Eliz and I hope Jake can manage the train transfers…

Jane is looking forward to meeting her favorite band All Time Low on Sunday at meet and greet during The Bamboozle Roadshow. Monday, she heads to softball camp at Villanova for a week. She is also doing two weeks at an overnight camp at Bryn Mawr College in July and going to the Outer Banks in August with Margaret, Meghan, and Chris. Did I mention she spent yesterday (Thursday) in New York with her friend Rachel?

Since Eliz and Jane won’t be here on Sunday, I’m planning a day of football… Well, at least the last two games (Azzurri/All Whites and Brazil/Ivory Coast (sorry Slovakia/Paraguay, I’m not rolling out of bed at 7.30am.) So, if you want to watch some footie, come on over!

Finally, I’ve lost another pound, which I am trying not to do. I’m trying to maintain 163 pounds, but have been between 161 and 162 the last couple of days. I’ve bumped to 1800 calories per day (from 1700) to try not to lose any additional weight. It’s been tough this week, because we’ve eaten out four times and I’ve had to estimate my calories once and calculate my calories after the fact another time. By the time I added ‘em up, I was short by 200 calories (ate 1600 calories) and it was too late to have anything else if I wanted to go to sleep by 2.00am. At 161, I’m down 73 pounds since I started on 10 December 2009.

More next week, after my cornea doc appointment.

By this time last Thursday I was sleeping. I guess I still had the pain and sleepy meds running in my system. So I’m getting back to my “normal” routine. It seems I get the most work done when everyone else in the house is sleeping and I don’t have phone calls to answer. 11:30 to whenever I go to sleep (usually between 1:00 and 2:00) is probably my most productive time working on the site or promoting it.

The fact that I can do that with some confidence is a result of the surgery. I use reading glasses that enables me to see the computer screen more clearly than I did prior to the surgery. I have the font size at +2 (two steps above medium,) which is where I used to have it. I am now also able to read, briefly, without the screen being reversed. For those not familiar with Macs, you can easily reverse the screen to see a negative view. Fonts that are usually black on a white background are reversed and become white on a black background. If my eye improve a little more, I may even be able to use a Windows machine (though why would I want to do that? Our point-of-sale system runs on a Windows machine…)

Other achievements I’ve had in the past week include seeing colors more vividly. I love just walking outside and looking around. The grass and leaves are so green and the sky is so blue. Flowers seem to have so much more color. I can also see cars on the road, signs on buildings, and, on the down side, marks and dirt on the carpet and walls.

Watching TV has become enjoyable again. I can now tell characters apart, where as before the surgery I was happy if I could tell if a character was white or black. I’ve also noticed that I am reading the ticker(s) at the bottom of the screen while I watch Bloomberg, CNBC, FNC or CNN. All the graphics on the news and sports looks sooo good.

The best thing for me so far on TV has been watching the Flyers. I don’t know if it is just from the surgery or also from watching in HD, but I can follow the puck much better that I’ve been able to in a long, long time. I guess it doesn’t hurt that they’ve been winning either. Lets see if I enjoy watching them play the Caps… I do like Ovechkin — he is one of my favorite players. He is a complete, tough player, unlike Crosby who is a gifted player but the worlds biggest crybaby.

My first outing to a sporting event was this past Monday. I went to Jane’s softball game against Abington Friends. I was very happy how much more of the action I was able to follow. I did lose track of the ball on some hits though. I enjoyed the game even though Jane’s team lost (though Jane knocking in a run and scored another) and the umpire was terrible (though that is not why they lost.) I am looking forward to watching some of Jake’s lacrosse games. His last game before my surgery, I had trouble seeing the players who weren’t near the sideline we were on.

Lets face it, my eyes still suck in a big way, BUT, I can see so much more than I could before the surgery. I have more confidence wondering around a store by myself (of course, until I get glasses or better reading glasses, I still can’t see what is on the shelf…) I’d also be comfortable finding the bathroom on my own in a restaurant, which is something I would not do before the surgery. I am still hopeful of reading printed material and throwing a ball around with Jane or Jake. Maybe next week…

At some point next Thursday morning, I will be in surgery hopefully only having a cataract removed. There is the chance that I will also receive another corneal endothelial transplant (DSAEK, partial-thickness corneal transplant, endothelial keratoplasty, or whatever you want to call it.) It is what I had done on 4 Dec 2008.

From what I gather, recovery time on the cataract extraction is about half that of the DSAEK (which is about four months.) Seems like I won’t have to wear that awful eye shield as long with only the cataract coming out. After the last surgery, I had to wear it for over a month. Lets not forget the misery on the day after my last surgery. My IOP went from seven to about 30. I puked my guts up all day long from the dramatic change in pressure. Showering was difficult too since I had to make sure I didn’t get any soap or water in my eye. That was only for a few months. Eliz will be shaving my head this weekend so that I only need to use a washcloth to wash my head.

I am very excited about the prospects of seeing more than I see now. Maybe I’ll see well enough to go to the movies again. I’d love to go and see a few Phils games, or even go see an Eagles game (you know, I’ve never been to the Link.) If things go really well, maybe I’ll be able to throw a softball around with Jane, a lacrosse ball with Jake, or even read the mail instead of having someone read it to me.

Of course, there are risks and I do worry about something going dreadfully wrong. I see only light out of my other eye, so any failure would dispose of the fantasies I’ve listed in the previous paragraph and make life a bit more challenging. I have no idea what I would do then. Lets just hope for the best.

I’ve been waiting for this week since the end of January, because I’m going to see the retina specialist on Friday. I’m hoping he can do a PAM test on me. No, it’s not part of the Aunt Jemima treatment, it stands for potential acuity meter. It will let me, and, more importantly, my team of eye specialists know how much of the “current” vision loss is due to the cataract in my left eye. I would hope it would come back 20/200 or better. If not, it might be time to rent a gun and buy a bullet. (Relax, I’m only joking. I’m worth far too much dead to take my own life.) Even without a PAM test, I’m hoping that Dr. Garg (retina) will give the okay for me to have Dr. Ayers (cornea) takeout the cataract. As much as I’ve loved the snow this winter, I don’t want it to foul up my 8:45am appointment in Bala on Friday. I see Dr. Ayers on 3 March and I’d like to schedule the cataract surgery then. I’ve gotta do something, it seems like my vision is getting worse by the day. My frustration level is extremely high.

On Wednesday, I’ve got an appointment with my GP. It was postponed from 10 Feb due to the little bit of snow we had (not to mention the lack of power and heat too.) When I saw Dr. Rist on 9 Dec, she told me to lose weight. Since then I’ve eaten only about 1500 calories per day. On days that I did some physical work like shovel snow, move our store inventory, etc., I would eat more calories as a reward. As of this morning, I am down 41 pounds. I’m interested to see what she says.

Jake is spending the week living at school, something he will have to do for his junior and senior years at Westtown. We dropped him off on Sunday and will pick him up this Sunday. He was really looking forward to it. Then, when we got there, he noticed a Super Nintendo game system (circa 1991.) The seniors whose room he and his friend are staying in left them a note saying that they could play with the system. We have a couple of games from the video store that Jake has always wanted to play, but we never had the system (well, we had it, but upgraded to something else before he was born.) I’m worried that school work might not be first on his mind this week. Eliz picked him up some candy from BJ’s the other day. You know, BJ’s doesn’t sell anything in small amounts. She got him a variety bag of candy bars (not the fun size, the normal size) and a bag with god know how many packages of Skittles in it. He posted today on Facebook that he was selling the candy. Prices were $.50 for candy available in the school store and $1.00 for candy not carried in the school store. I’m interested to see what he does with the funds, though his intentions could be philanthropic.

Jane found her letters from Tabitha tonight. Tabitha was conjured up when Jake literally lost his first tooth. It either fell out onto the ground or he swallowed it with his lunch that day at Granite Run Mall. He was disappointed because he was so looking forward to putting it under his pillow for the toothfairy. That night, after he went to bed, I wrote a letter from Tabitha, a toothfair from the North American office. I expected it to be a one and done sort of thing, but when he lost his next tooth, we was just as excited to get another letter as he was to get the money. And of course, if you do it for one, the other has to have it too… Jane actually got a letter or two before she even lost a tooth. She would sometimes leave notes for Tabitha under her pillow. Jane laughs at the letters now, but she had fun reading them tonight. She said each one had a little education, like Sesame Street. I also would include things that I thought would boost their confidence and nudges on nutrition. One day I’ll post them or publish them.

It is amazing how easy 700 words comes off my fingertips these days… So much for a short update. More later this week on the retina appointment.

It’s funny how excited I still get about snow. This winter has been a dream come true. I have always loved going out into the snow. When I was a kid in the late 70′s and we had a couple of big storms (okay, big then, but not 2010 standards,) I’d have to shovel the driveway and some of the grass so our schnauzer named Schnappes could go out to play and do his business.

I would often shovel our elderly neighbor’s driveway first because of the “payment” I would receive. Fresh-baked, homemade gingerbread men. Wow were they good. They were usually done by the time I finished shoveling our driveway. One time, my dad came home early and noticed I had done the neighbor’s driveway first and asked why. I told him because he couldn’t bake.

This last week has been great. Two huge storms with plenty of snow. Jake, Jane, and I started shoveling Saturday around noon (I had shoveled once on Friday night while Eliz was picking up Jake from school after he attended the school play Little Shop of Horrors.) The three of us shoveled for about an hour and then Jane had to go inside to get ready for a Bar Mitzvah which she was attending at 5:00pm. Jake and I continued shoveling so Eliz could get out and get Jane to her friends house to carpool to the service (thankfully the party was postponed until noon the next day.) Jake and I cleared enough snow so Eliz and Jane could get out and had the whole driveway clean by the time Eliz was ready to pull in after returning from dropping Jane off and looking for a new shovel.

With yesterday’s storm, Jane and I went out to shovel. I did most of the shoveling while Jane did some, but concentrated on building a snowman. We were outside for a little more than an hour and had cleared a good portion of the area of the driveway by the garage doors and a path to the street. I intended to go back out, but our power had gone out. After resting for 10 minutes or so, Eliz said we should play a game. The choices were Life, Monopoly, and Risk. I am not a fan of Life and we thought Risk would’ve been too hard without power and little outside light due to the dark gray clouds and heavy snow coming down. Monopoly it was!

We had fun playing for over an hour. We stopped for a tea and hot chocolate break and as we started to play again, the power came back on. We took a few minutes to power up the computers in the office and check for any sales on ForYourSalon.com (we had some!) We resumed playing around 4:00ish. After another hour, Jake was broke. He went and watched Ghostbusters that was playing on cable. Eliz, Jane, and I played on. Jane was just about broke, but then she landed on Free Parking, where we start off with $500 and then add all the fines and taxes to the pot. She scored nearly $3000! She was down to one monopoly, but now had cash.

At around 6:00pm, the power went out again. We continued to play with flashlights and a candle providing us light. Eliz took too many rides on the railroads (all owned by me) and was living it up in hotels on Boardwalk, Park Place, Oriental Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue (also owned by me,) so she went broke. With Jane only having one monopoly, she wasn’t bringing in enough cash. I believe a stop at my hotel on Boardwalk finished her off. It was the longest I’ve ever played. It was probably three to four hours long, not including breaks. It was awesome. Had the power not gone out, we probably wouldn’t have played (and even if we did, we definitely wouldn’t have played that long.)

Today we all went outside around 10:45am to clear the driveway. The area we shoveled yesterday had about eight or nine inches on it and was much easier to shovel today since it was lighter. The rest of the driveway, included the path to the street which was covered over and as high as the non-shoveled areas, wasn’t as easy. Snow had drifted in some areas and yesterday’s snow was still heavy and much icier. It was so tiring mainly because of piles of snow along the driveway that we had to throw the shovel-full of snow over were so tall.

While we shoveled, we joked around with one another and talked at times. We finished off the driveway and the area in front of the mailbox (in time to get one check and a blizzard of bills today.) We went inside to rest for a few minutes and decide on lunch. We ended up at Five Guys in Lawrence Park. Even the ride there was nice in the heated car. The restaurant had the heat cranked and it felt great there too.

The power had come back on just before we left for lunch at 2:00pm (I had to open the garage door manually, but by the time Eliz backed out and I came in to close the door manually the power was on,) so when we returned, it was back to work. It was nice to see we had a few more sales to acknowledge since the power had gone out.

All in all, it was a fantastic 24 hours. Without the power, we spent more time together as a family. We worked together to clear the driveway (even though Eliz shouldn’t have shoveled since she is still getting therapy for her arm.) It felt good to be with the kids without them wanting to bolt for their computers or a video game and me not taking another call or updating the website. I guess we probably wanted to do that, but we couldn’t. No matter, I still enjoyed the time together. I can’t wait for the next snow.

Our holiday season officially ended yesterday with the celebration of Jake’s 16th birthday and my dad’s 92nd birthday. That is one long stretch, though some years it is longer. It starts with Chanukkah (I’m jewish,) continues to Christmas (Eliz is catholic,) then on to Jane’s birthday (2 Jan,) and finally to Jake (and my dad to a lesser extent.) This year’s holiday season was pretty subtle because Eliz and I have been busting our rear ends (and in Eliz’s case, her arm too) to get out of mold. I’m hopeful of a more joyous season this coming December.

So the holidays are over. We’re out of Folcroft and restocking the shelves in the new space and we’re starting to make local deliveries from the phone orders we’re taking. Just when it looked like things were starting to settle down, a couple of new challenges have emerged. My mother hasn’t been feeling well since her fall about three months ago. Eliz has been taking her to various doctors over the past week, with another appointment on Monday. One doctor thinks she may have shingles. It has worn my dad down. He feels helpless since he can no longer drive and his vision and memory are starting to slip. We’ll know more on my mom on Monday.

The other challenge is me. I’ve noticed that my vision has deteriorated over the last six months and has really started to nose dive in the past few weeks. (I got a new HDTV for my birthday and hooked up the HDMI cable about four weeks ago and was wowed that I could notice a difference in the picture. Watching the news tonight, I couldn’t make out many of the graphics that said where the story was taking place and the reporters/interviewee’s name.)

At Wills Eye today, my glaucoma doc, Dr. Pro, told me he didn’t think the issue was glaucoma related. My cornea doc had previously told me that he didn’t think it was cornea related. Dr. Pro mentioned today there were two other possibilities: the cataract or a retina problem. He said while the cataract might be the cause of some of the issue, he said it wouldn’t lead to the significant vision loss I have sustained over the past weeks. I couldn’t read the big E on the chart with or without the pin holes. The E is the 20/400 at the very beginning of the eye chart. I was able to count fingers at about three feet. This, of course, was in my left eye, the “good” one. As usual, I could tell when a light was off or on using my right eye, so there’s no excuse if I leave a light on in a room…

This development is troubling to me, though not unexpected. My whole life I knew the chances were good that one day the lights would fade. Maybe this can be reversed. I’ll know more on Monday after I have an OCT (The technique of optical coherence tomography (OCT) produces high resolution, high speed, non-invasive, cross-sectional images of body tissue. from the University of Miami) test. Hopefully, I’ll have some images to post and some good news to deliver. Funny how last April and May I was trying to find a way to be able to have a catch with Jane to now just trying not to walk into things or find items on my own.

As usual, there is never a dull moment with me, especially when I do walk into something. I end up cursing like a drunken sailor with turrets even when I don’t hurt myself. The frustration gets hold of me for a minute or two. Sometimes it does actually hurt…

I don’t often write about good days here, but today was one of those days that I wanted to share with the world. It wasn’t exciting, extravagant, or exotic. Nor were the burdens that weigh on us every day removed. Today was a simple day spent together. It’d be a normal day if it happened more frequently, but we’ll have to take them one day at a time.

After lunch, we went to visit my parents. We do that every weekend and sometimes during the week if they need something. Today we took them a couple of rye breads, a frozen dinner they asked for, a box of Tastykake cupcakes courtesy of my friend Alex, and a couple of treats. While we’re visiting, we talk for awhile, watch TV, and help them any way we can. Usually, the kids and Eliz hang out with my mom, while I talk with my dad.

Today was a bit different because my mom was preparing dinner when we arrived, so we all kind of hung out in the kitchen and dinning area. When we arrived to their apartment, there was a gift on the shelf outside their door for my dad. After we went through all the stuff we brought for them, he opened the present. It was from a few ladies who my father taught to shoot pool. My parents both laughed as Eliz read who the pound of fudge was from. Between that gift, the treats we brought them, and the ice cream they have stashed in their freezer from the “cafe” down the hall, they should have enough sweets for a week or two.

After my mom had everything simmering on the stove, my parents, Eliz, and I went into the den, while the kids went into the bedroom to watch TV. We talked about Shavu’ot, a jewish holiday that Jake has to do a presentation on at school (which neither I or my parents knew anything about,) Jake’s decision to got to Japan with the Japanese club from Westtown, some trips we took when I was a kid, and business. We spent between and hour and a half and two hours visiting, then we headed across the street to Borders and then came home.

Since it is Hanukkah, we wanted to do one of our family traditions: make potato latkes. (The kids are being raised without religion, though they are exposed to both jewish and catholic traditions. If they want to pick a religion when they’re older, that’s up to them.) The best part of latkes this year was that both kids wanted to help in the preparation. They both peeled potatoes. Jake then cut them up for Jane to feed into the food processor for shredding. Eliz then grated the onion in the food processor. I added the other ingredients and cooked them. Jane later said she wanted to form some and cook them, so my cooking duties were over for the day. Don’t tell her, but she is better at cooking them than me… We then enjoyed them together, along with roasted turkey breast, at the dinner table.

Simply eating together at the dinner table is good. We don’t get to do it as often as we should. We all had a hand in making the latkes and spent real quality time with one another. Eliz and I both really enjoyed it.

So, today marked the first anniversary of my partial cornea transplant (for those that need to know specifics, I had a DSAEK procedure, which is a partial-thickness corneal transplant that replaces only the endothelial layer.) I guess this means that at least part of my body (a very small part on a rather large body) is 70 years old. God knows I often feel like I’m 70…

When I had the surgery, I wondered how well I would see in the days and months afterwards. As I’ve mentioned in other posts, most of my doctors were pretty optimistic. They all agreed that unless something went wrong, I’d get back to 20/200. Some thought I could get to 20/100 or even better. One year later and my vision is at 20/400.

Dreams of reading a newspaper, magazine, purchase orders, invoices (those that I create to send to a customer, not those sent by a vendor — Eliz can read those,) mail, and anything else printed on paper never came true. Wild fantasies of tossing a softball around with Jane, hitting a tennis ball around with Jake, going to a Phillies, Flyers, or Eagles game (you know, I’ve never been to the Link) and enjoying it have all been placed back deep in the corner of my mind next to being a rock star, an action-hero actor, or a top chef.

As I’ve previously posted, none of my ophthalmologists know why my vision has deteriorated since June. Maybe it’s from the mold at our business (we’ll know shortly, because we are vacating or current building very shortly.) Maybe it’s age related. Maybe it’s because I’ve gained weight. Maybe it’s just supposed to be this way.

I have an appointment on 9 December with the cornea specialist. Perhaps he will have an answer better than the last time I saw him, when he told me that he didn’t know what it was and it would be a hard fix. I’ll post sometime after the appointment and let you know.

I do plenty of complaining, whining, and ranting here. One thing I’m not sure I’ve ever done is thank the donor of the endothelia that now resides on the fifth layer of my cornea. I don’t know who he or she was. I only know that the donor was 69 years old when they died and without their cornea (even though they only used the endothelia, the whole cornea was available to me) I would almost certainly be much worse off. Thank you sir/madam, I do appreciate your gift.

Today, I went to see The Hangover with Jake and his friend Maya. I “had” to go, since both are under 17, but in reality, I wanted to go because everybody I know that has seen that film has enjoyed it. We arrived just before the start time, but the queue at the ticket counter moved extremely slowly. Once we had the tickets, I walked in with Jake and Maya, got their munchie order, and returned to the lobby with two ticket stubs. Eliz and I purchased $32.75 worth of goodies (3 small drinks, a small popcorn, a medium popcorn, and an order of pretzel bites.) Eliz and I carried them into the Theater 9. She located the kids and gave them their snacks. She then helped me find a seat. The movie had just begun and she found me a seat on the left side next to a wheelchair “stall.” I thanked her and she left to take Jane to Staples for school supplies.

That’s how the movie started out for me. I felt stupid. I was carrying my drink and small popcorn, so Eliz had to guide me to my seat by pushing on my right arm to go left, my left arm to go right, and my back to go forward. Since I was in the front half of the theater, more than a few people saw me “find” my seat. I felt like a three year old (though, with the cost of my drink and popcorn, better to feel like an idiot or child than to risk dropping my precious snacks…)

Just after sitting down, the opening credits began (the movie had a scene before the credits started however.) I couldn’t read any of them, which I didn’t really expect to be able to see them. I may have missed something that said, “Earlier,” or “Two days ago,” because before the credits started, the scene that was playing was one of the guys telling the bride-to-be that they had lost the groom.

I thought the movie was funny, but I’m not sure how much I missed. I couldn’t really see what was going on, but I knew I was missing something because the audience was laughing when there was no dialog or funny sounds. There were more than a few scenes that were visual (though one I could follow because of the sounds was the scene where one of the guys is going to the bathroom, the tiger growls, and the man must’ve turned to look, because I could hear him peeing on the floor.) I think the funniest things I must have missed were the images at the end, as the credits began to roll. People were laughing hysterically at some of them. That was the moment I realized that I’ve got to stop coming to the movies. It is too frustrating to me. I have already given up on seeing any type of action movie or foreign film in theaters.

I love movies, but when I left the theater today I was upset/frustrated/disappointed. Should I just stop going to the movies or is there something I could use to help me see what’s going on? Any ideas?
